ABS Plastic Planter
I was tasked with creating a kitchen planter with growth lights (replaced with LED for display) that fits a certain style of kitchen. I started with some basic models made out of Triplex in order to get some design ideas out there and see what I wanted to change and improve. I was only permitted to use ABS plastic and was not allowed to heat form the material.
Model planters
Having worked with Triplex before the models went by fast and gave me a good understanding for the environment my planter would work for. It also highlighted some potential problems such as access to the plants and space to work with them.
Final Prototype
Having looked at my designs I made the model wider for easier access to the plants and also refined the stands for where the growth lights would be for better light distribution. I also designed a draining system for excess water to flow into that can be removed and poured out.
Final Model
I then started with my final model in ABS. It was not too hard to cut and manipulate the ABS and it was quite a bit stronger than working with Triplex. The model was chemically bonded together and I added plexiglass in order to diffuse the strong lights so that they don't bother the observer.
